Deck Staining in San Antonio, TX

Deck Staining · San Antonio, TX

Even color back on gray, weathered deck boards

Deck staining puts color back into wood that the sun has turned gray. We stain cedar and pine decks, including pressure-treated pine. First comes deck and fence cleaning to wash off the gray layer and any algae or mildew. Once the boards dry all the way through, the stain goes on.

Based in San Antonio, we serve the Hill Country and the I-35 corridor through New Braunfels toward Austin. If your fence has faded too, fence staining can go on the same estimate. To set up a free estimate, call or text (512) 905-8038.

Wood Deck Staining for Cedar and Pine Decks

Sun is hard on a wood deck. Its UV rays turn the boards gray. As the wood's natural oils dry up, boards can crack and split. Stain protects the wood from the UV rays behind that graying.

Our deck staining service covers the floor boards and stairs, plus the railings. Cedar and pine decks go through the same steps, pressure-treated or not. Each part gets a wash and a full dry-out before any stain touches it.

On composite decking, our work ends with the wash, which still takes the dirt and mold film off the boards. Some composite decks have wood stairs or railings, and those wood parts can still take stain.

Deck Restoration for Gray, Weathered Wood

Deck restoration is a wash plus stain for a gray, weathered wood deck. The wash takes off the gray layer and any green or black growth. The boards dry for a couple of days, then the stain brings back one even color. Plan on the wash and the stain landing on different days.

The type of stain changes the look. One cost guide says clear and transparent stains work best on decks in excellent condition. Semi-transparent stain lets some of the grain show through. Solid stains help hide flaws in older wood, but they usually show more wear from foot traffic.

Stain changes a board's color, not its condition. Cracks and splits stay, and so do soft, spongy spots. At the estimate, we flag any boards like that so you know before work starts.

Deck Cleaning and Staining in San Antonio Weather

Stain needs the right weather as much as clean wood. A national cost guide says to stain on dry days that stay between 50 and 90 degrees all day. San Antonio averages 122 days a year at 90 degrees or hotter, and 18 at 100 or more.

Winter brings the opposite problem. In January, San Antonio averages just 5 days that stay above 50 degrees. Spring and fall are the best stretches here. In an average April, 24 days stay above 50 degrees and only 3 reach 90.

Rain matters as much as heat. The job needs a few dry days in a row, first for the wood and then for the fresh stain. The same guide blames peeling on poor prep, poor weather, or a deck that was not dry yet. Our order of work covers all three: wash, wait, test, then stain.

FAQ

Deck Staining Questions, Answered

Common questions about deck staining across the San Antonio to Austin corridor. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (512) 905-8038

How soon can a new wood deck be stained?
Not right away. Pressure-treated wood can need several weeks, or even months, to dry before it takes stain. A water drop test tells you when. Drops that bead on the surface mean wait, and drops that soak in mean the wood is ready.
How long does the deck dry between the wash and the stain?
Plan on about two days of dry weather. Shaded decks often need a third day, and any rain in between pushes the stain back. Before staining, we sprinkle water on the boards. The stain goes on once the water soaks in instead of beading up.
How often does a deck need restaining in the Texas sun?
National cost guides put it at every 2 to 3 years. The boards give their own signs, too. Graying, discoloration, mold and mildew are among the signs a deck needs stain. Check the deck each spring, before the summer heat sets in.
When is the best time of year to stain a deck in San Antonio?
Spring or fall. One national guide points to those shoulder seasons, when it is not too hot or humid. In San Antonio, July and August each average 29 days at 90 degrees or hotter. Booking the estimate early helps the stain land in a mild, dry stretch.
Do you stain the railings and stairs?
Yes, on wood decks. Railings and stairs get the same wash and dry time as the floor boards. Cost guides price railings by the linear foot and count stair treads and risers in the deck's square footage. One guide notes that railings stay in good shape longer than the floor boards and need stain less often.
What does deck staining cost?
Our services start at $299, and the price depends on the deck's size and the wood's condition. For market price ranges, see our deck staining cost guide. The estimate is free, and larger projects can be financed. For a number on your deck, call or text (512) 905-8038.
