Fence Staining · San Antonio, TX

Fresh stain on clean, dry fence boards

Fence staining brings color back to wood that the sun has faded to gray. We stain cedar and pine privacy fences, the standard backyard fence around San Antonio, plus wood decks. Each job starts with deck and fence cleaning to strip off the gray and any growth. The stain goes on after the wood has dried all the way through.

Duck Property Care is based in San Antonio and serves the San Antonio to Austin corridor. Our area runs from the Hill Country towns to the I-35 cities up toward Kyle. Services start at $299 and estimates are free, with financing for larger projects. Call or text (512) 905-8038 to set one up.

Fence Staining for Cedar and Pine Privacy Fences

San Antonio averages 18 days a year of 100-plus degree heat. Strong summer sun fades bare wood to gray, and the heat dries the boards out. Dry boards shrink, and over time they crack and split along the grain.

Stain sinks into the wood and adds UV protection to the boards. It does that best on a clean fence, where it can soak in evenly. The wood also has to dry out completely, since most stains will not stick to damp wood.

Fence stains range from transparent to solid, and all of them keep the wood's natural texture. Stain that goes on right fades over time instead of chipping or peeling. That leaves less prep work when the fence needs its next coat.

Wood Fence Restoration for Gray, Weathered Fences

Wood fence restoration brings a gray, weathered fence back to an even color. The wash comes first and takes off the gray layer, along with any green or black growth. Once the wood has dried through, the stain goes on.

Restoration has limits, and it helps to know them before the work starts. Stain brings color back to old pickets, but it does not close cracks or smooth out split boards. Rough wood takes the color and stays rough. We point out boards like that at the estimate.

A weathered fence often takes more stain than newer wood. That is one reason the wood's condition is part of the price. You can have both sides stained, or only the side that faces your yard.

Deck Staining for Wood Decks

Deck staining follows the same order as a fence. The deck gets cleaned first, and the boards dry out fully before any stain goes on. Deck boards in shade hold water longer, so they get extra drying time.

We stain the boards and railings of wood decks. Composite decking is cleaned, never stained. If your deck pairs composite boards with wood stairs or railings, the wood parts can take stain after the wash.

When the deck and the fence both need stain, one estimate can cover the whole job. Financing is available for larger projects like that.

FAQ

Fence Staining Questions, Answered

Common questions about fence staining across the San Antonio to Austin corridor. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (512) 905-8038

How long after washing can a fence be stained?
Plan on two dry days after the wash, or three if the boards sit in shade. A few drops of water on a board will tell you if it is ready. If the water beads up, the wood needs more time.
How often does a fence need restaining in the Texas sun?
It depends on the stain type and how much sun the fence gets. One Austin fence company's cost guide budgets for restaining every 2 to 3 years with semi-transparent stain. The same guide puts solid stain at up to 5 years. Once the color fades and gray shows through again, the fence is due.
When can a new fence be stained?
New wood needs time to dry out before it will take stain. A national cost guide puts the wait at 1 to 6 months after the fence goes up. Cedar can be ready in 1 to 2 months, while some pressure-treated wood needs 3 to 4 months or more. The same water drop check tells you when the boards are ready.
Does my HOA need to approve the stain color?
Check your HOA's rules before you pick a color. Some HOAs only allow certain stain colors, such as cedar tones or neutral shades. If yours uses an approval form, get the color cleared before the stain goes on. Staining a fence in the wrong color can mean paying to stain it again.
Can you stain a composite deck?
No. Composite decking is cleaned, never stained. A low-pressure wash is the whole job for those boards. Wood parts of the same deck can still get wood deck staining.
How much does fence staining cost?
Our services start at $299, and financing is available on larger projects. The price depends on the fence's length and height, one side or both, and the wood's condition. Our fence staining cost guide lays out market prices. For your own number, call or text (512) 905-8038 for a free estimate.
