The lake was finished in 1964 and holds about 80 miles of shoreline. Tourism is the main industry around it, with marinas, lodges and river outfitters along the water. The Guadalupe River runs in above the dam and back out below it toward New Braunfels.
That traffic shows up on property. Lake homes take sun, wind off the water and steady use through the summer. Rental houses see it worse, since a new group arrives every few days.

The hills around the lake are thick with Ashe juniper, the tree locals call mountain cedar. It pollinates from the middle of December into February, and the peak usually lands in January. That yellow film settles on roofs, siding, screens and patio furniture.
Live oaks do the slower damage. They drop leaves, acorns and sap that stain concrete and wood. Their shade keeps the north side of a house damp, which is where algae starts. Deer bed down in that same shade, then track dirt across walkways and patios.
Black streaks on a shingle roof are a bacteria called Gloeocapsa magma. Pressure would strip granules off those shingles and shorten the life of the roof. Our roof cleaning uses low pressure and cleaning solutions instead.
Water out here is hard. The local supply mixes lake water with Trinity Aquifer groundwater. Plenty of homes on acreage tracts pull from private wells in that same aquifer. Either way it carries dissolved limestone, and limestone leaves white mineral spots.
You see it first on glass and on light colored walls. Sprinklers throw well water onto windows, and the spots bake on in summer sun. The same minerals leave a chalky haze on stone and stucco.
Then there is the dust. Caliche drives, ranch roads and new construction put a pale film on everything. Driveway and concrete cleaning with a surface cleaner pulls that film out of the pores. The same pass lifts oil drips and tire marks off the slab.
Canyon Lake has no city hall. It is an unincorporated part of Comal County, built out of dozens of subdivisions and older settlements. Canyon Lake Hills alone counts close to 2,500 properties. Mystic Shores spreads across thousands of acres between the Guadalupe River and the lake.
The housing stock runs wide. Cypress Cove, Tanglewood Shores and Canyon Lake Village West hold older homes on wooded lots. Newer builds sit up on the ridges off Triple Peak and out toward Cranes Mill. Aging painted siding and weathered wood want a gentler approach, so fence and deck cleaning runs at lower pressure.
