Downtown San Marcos has seven locally designated historic districts. Belvin Street, Burleson Street, Hopkins Street, San Antonio Street and Dunbar all sit near the square. Many of those houses went up between the 1880s and the early 1900s. Painted wood siding that old does not take high pressure well.
We use the soft wash method on homes like these. Low pressure carries the solution onto the surface, and the detergents kill mold, mildew and algae at the root. The wall rinses clean without water forced up behind the siding. The same approach works on the stucco, limestone and fiber cement found all over town.
Shade makes the growth worse. Live oaks and pecans cover a lot of the older streets in San Marcos. North facing walls under those trees stay wet longer. That is where the green film shows up first.
