Schertz sits on the I-35 corridor northeast of San Antonio, and the dirt here follows a pattern. Older streets in Woodland Oaks and Greenshire sit under mature live oaks and pecans. Schertz grew in waves. Randolph Field opened nearby in 1930, and the town filled in through the 1950s and 1960s. The Fairways at Scenic Hills dates to the mid 1970s, Woodland Oaks to 1984 and Greenshire to the mid 1980s. The trees on those blocks are big now.
Schertz protects them by ordinance. A permit is needed to take down an oak, elm or pecan wider than eight inches across. The shade is worth keeping, and it also holds moisture on north and east walls most of the day. Damp brick, stucco and fiber cement grow a green film that has roots in the surface.
Roofs on those same streets show dark stripes running down the shingles. That is Gloeocapsa magma, an algae that feeds on the limestone filler in asphalt shingles. Our roof cleaning uses solution and low pressure so the growth dies at the root. High pressure would strip granules and cut the life of the roof short.
South Schertz is still filling in. The Crossvine is a master planned community off FM 1518 and Lower Seguin Road. Rhine Valley and Willow Grove grew in around it, and the whole pocket sits close to I-10. TxDOT is widening FM 1518 from FM 78 to I-10, a 5.6 mile job that runs into 2028.
Open lots and road work push pale limestone dust downwind onto everything. It settles into the pores of concrete and dulls a new driveway inside one season. Our driveway and concrete cleaning runs a flat surface cleaner that leaves an even finish across the slab.
The same pass works on sidewalks, patios, pool decks and walkways. Live oak tannin drips leave rust colored spots on light concrete, and detergent plus dwell time brings those up. Oil and tire marks near the garage apron get pretreated first.
Randolph Air Force Base sits minutes down FM 78 from Schertz and has shaped this town since the 1930s. Schertz Cibolo Universal City ISD runs Purple Star campuses that support military families, including Clemens High School. Military households move on orders, so homes here change hands more often than in a town without a base.
Most of those moves land between May and August, and June and July are the heaviest months. That is also the hottest, dustiest stretch of the Texas year. A house that has to show well in July needs the siding, the concrete and the glass cleaned first.
